I moved here with a severe gardening
addiction already, so I could not wait to get started gardening
in my new home. We moved into the house in November of 2006. I
had purchased some tall bearded Iris rhizomes on a Dave's Garden
Coop, and those were the very first thing that I planted at our
new home. They were planted around a big
rock that we left in the front yard.
The next thing I began work on was
the front border. I could
not start on that until early Spring 2007.
After the front border, came the woodland
driveway garden. It is still a work in progress, but shaping
up.
We really wanted to have vegetables,
but the soil here is so poor, so 2007 we decided to try straw
bale gardening. In 2008, we opted for raised
vegetable beds.
Along the east side of our back yard
is an area that would be impossible to have lawn as there are
so many rocks. The amount of clay and rocks also prevents working
the soil much for any kind of garden attempt, so I just tried
scattering flower seeds on there, which resulted in what I call
my scattered seed garden.
This garden has also become a place for butterflies
to enjoy.
I always wanted roses in Louisiana,
but had too many trees for them. Here I have lots of full sun
area, so roses are going to be an
integral part of our landscape. The newest bed is our driveway
rose bed. Some of my roses were purchased to plant around
our Pergola which was constructed
in 2007 for our wedding.
